It is antitussive and expectorant loosening and helping to expel congestion in the upper respiratory tract as it accelerates tracheal mucus secretion. The demulcent action is attributed to glycyrrhizin. It has been recently found that Liquiritin apioside is an active compound present in the methanolic extract of liquorice. The compound inhibits capsaicin induced cough.
