Botanical Name: Phyllanthus niruri Hook.f.Linn Syn Phyllanthus amarus Schu & Thonn
Family: Euphorbiaceae

Description: The plant grows up to no more than 1½ feet tall and has small yellow flowers.
They have small leaves and very small (2mm) fruits that burst open and the seeds are hurled away.
When the plants are picked, the feathery leaves fold in, completely closing themselves.

Chemical Constituents:  Main chemical constituents are phyllanthine, hypophyllanthine, alkaloids, quercetin, quercertrin, isoquercitrin, astragalin, amarin, geraniin, corilagin, rutin and 3-O-glucopyranoside.

Properties: The plant is of medicinal importance for numerous ailments like dysentery, influenza,diabetes, diuretics, jaundice, kidney stone, dyspepsia, antihepatotoxic, antihepatitis-B, antihyperglycemic and also as antiviral and antibacterial.
