Description: Walnut is a large deciduous tree, reaching a height of 35 meters. It usually has short trunk, with brown to gray bark, smooth and fissured. Crown is rich and broad. Leaves are green and alternate, ovate to lanceolate in shape. Male flowers are drooping catkins, and female flowers are grouped in clusters, forming a fruit with a deeply ridged green husk, brown shell and fleshy, edible interior.

Chemical Constituents: The main constituent of fruit is fat ranging from 78.83% to 82.14%, being the nutritional value around 720 kcal per 100 g of fruits. Linoleic acid is the major fatty acid reaching the maximum value of 60.30%  followed by oleic, linolenic and palmitic acids.

Properties: They are rich in monounsaturated fatty acids (about 72%) like oleic acid and an excellent source of all important omega-3 essential fatty acids like linoleic acid, alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) and arachidonic acids.They are rich source of many phyto-chemical substances that may contribute to their overall anti-oxidant activity, including melatonin, ellagic acid, vitamin E, carotenoids, and poly-phenolic compounds. Further, they are an excellent source of vitamin E, especially rich in gamma-tocopherol; They are also packed with many important B-complex groups of vitamins such as riboflavin, niacin, thiamin, pantothenic acid, vitamin B-6, and folates. They also very are rich source of minerals such as manganese, copper, potassium, calcium, iron,magnesium, zinc, and selenium. Applied locally, it helps to keep skin well protected from dryness.
