Description: It grows throughout the subtropical Himalaya in the Indian state of Assam, Arunachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand within an altitudinal range of 1000–3000 m. It is a perennial errect rhizomatous herb with galbrous leaves and white flowers which are borne in dense terminal spikes. The rhizomes are aromatic with bitter camphorous taste.
Chemical Constituents: The rhizome contains essential oils, starch, resins, limonene, 1, 8-cineole, 2-alkanones, linalool, camphor, lindyl acetate, β-terpineol, borneol, benzyl acetate, β-phellandrene, methyl paracumarin acetate, cinnamic ethyl cadinene, sesquiterpenes, sesquiterpene alcohols and cinnamaldehyde.
Properties: Digestive, stomachic and vasodilator. It is used in treating nausea, halitosis, vomiting, diminished appetite, hiccups and local inflammation. This plant is carminative and expectorant and is used in asthma. The rhizomes are powdered and used as an antiseptic agent and as a poultice for various aches and pains. Ginger lily is used in treating liver complaints, indigestion and pain.
