Description: The Kokum (Garcinia indica) is from a tall tropical evergreen tree grown specifically in India’s Goa and southern Maharashtra states. The fruit drops from the trees in April-May where it is mostly hand-collected. The fruit is round, about the size of a kiwi, and when ripe has a red-purple color. The fruit is juicy with a distinctive acidic flavor.

Chemical Constituents: Anthocyanins (Cyanidin-3-sambubioside, Cyanidin-3-glucoside), Fatty Acids (palmitic, stearic, oleic, linoleic acid), Hydroxycitric acid (HCA), Garcinol. Anthocyanins are well known for their antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and anti-carcinogenic activity. Hydroxycitric acid (HCA) has role in fat/lipid metabolism and helps in weight loss.

Properties: The fruit of Gracinia indica is an excellent source of anti-oxidants and promote cell regeneration and repair. Garcinia helps in constipation, acidity indigestion. Kokum is effective in case of flatulence, stomach pain and gaseous distension. Garcinia conatins HCA (Hydroxycitric Acid) that helps in weight reduction.
The application of Gracinia indica butter is quite useful for cracked heels. Kokum is also welcome in diseases and conditions such as hyperacidity, piles, fistula, heatstroke, infection, dysentery, etc.
