Description: Hemidesmus indicus is a perennial twining shrub with woody root stock, thickened at the nodes. Leaves simple, opposite and variable from elliptic-oblong to linear lanceolate, dark green, variegated with white above. Flowers crowded in subsessile cymes in the opposite axils.
Chemical composition: Main chemical constituents are sarsaponin, smilacin, p-methoxy salicylic aldehyde, beta-sitosterol, sarsapogenin, smilgenin, sitosterol, stigmasterol.
Properties: Leaves of Hemidesmus is used for the treatment of Gum disorders, It has anti-inflammatory, astringent and antioxidant activity. Used in the treatment of menstrual disorders in women.
